Chapter 13: Review of Collagen Fillers
Andrew B. Denton, MD, FRCS(C) and Nael Shoman, MD

This chapter of the publication reviews the history of soft tissue augmentation, which dates back more than a century. Beginning in the 1970’s, a wide range of collagen derived injectable products have been developed for clinical use. Collagen based soft tissue fillers have been widely used for both aesthetic and reconstructive purposes. More recently, their use has been eclipsed to a certain extent by hyaluronic acid based fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane, however, they still remain an important part of the injectable filler armamentarium.

Chapter 15: Porcine Collagen: Evolence
Andrew B. Denton, MD, FRCS(C) and Nael Shoman, MD

This chapter of the publication discusses what is currently the most commonly used collagen-based filler – Evolence. Derived from porcine collagen, this product represents an advance over previous bovine-derived collagen products in that it does not require a pre-treatment allergy test. Used most often in the lips and nasolabial folds, it is an effective filler with lifespan equivalent to the hyaluronic acid based products.
