As we begin to age, our forehead develops lines, wrinkles and our eyebrows sag. These changes can leave us looking tired, sad, or angry. Fortunately, brow lift surgery, sometimes also called an eyebrow lift or forehead lift, can help minimize these issues. This highly effective cosmetic procedure raises the eyebrows and helps soften the lines and wrinkles on the forehead to give us a more youthful appearance.

The Evolution of the Brow Lift Procedure

Like most cosmetic procedures, brow lift surgery techniques have evolved and become far more effective over the decades. The classic or traditional brow lift surgical procedure involved large scalp incisions and lengthy healing periods. Today, recovery time and incisions are minimized using endoscopic and keyhole techniques.

The Original Brow Lift Procedure

As first described, in order to perform a brow lift, the surgeon makes an incision along the hairline (tricophytic incision) or from ear to ear across the top of the head (coronal incision). The incision enables the surgeon to lift the skin of the forehead and perform the necessary adjustments to tissues and facial muscles. However, the coronal approach causes changes in the position of the hairline and the tricophytic approach causes permanent numbness of the frontal scalp. Healing times are longer than with the endoscopic and keyhole incision approaches. These techniques are also not ideal for a male patient. There are instances where these techniques are very useful – mainly in a female brow lift patient with a low hairline.

The Endoscopic Brow Lift

Today, the endoscopic brow lift is performed using an endoscopic telescope, classifying it as a minimally invasive procedure. Once the patient is placed under anesthesia, a series of tiny incisions are made in the scalp hidden in the hair. The endoscope telescope, which has a camera attached, enables him to use specialized surgical tools to adjust and elevate the brow tissue to minimize wrinkles and lift the eyebrows. Due to the smaller incisions and less trauma to underlying tissues, the endoscopic brow lift involves a shorter healing period and less scarring than the traditional procedure.

A similar approach can be performed with slightly longer incisions without the endoscopic camera being used.
