For many women and men in their mid-forties to fifties, an important part of optimizing their appearance involves rejuvenating their neck and reversing many of the age-related changes that occur in this area. Over time, the skin of the neck becomes loose. Also, as we age, our front neck muscles begin to separate causing the characteristic “bands.” It’s important to note that often facelift procedures include neck lift surgery since it provides the patient with a more complete and natural facial rejuvenation. Often when patients undergo a facelift procedure without a neck lift the results may not be as impressive since the neck is basically the supporting base of the face. Nevertheless, a neck lift can also be performed as a stand-alone procedure if individuals are satisfied with the condition of their facial appearance.

The Aim of a Neck Lift

Dr. Denton’s neck lift procedures aim to tighten the neck muscles under the skin by suturing them together in the midline. This procedure is called a platysmaplasty. The removal of excess skin, called cervicoplasty, is also performed to restore the natural angle that exists between the jaw and the neck. By restoring the jawline he provides his patients with a more youthful profile. If you choose to undergo a neck lift, you do not need to worry about visible scarring since the incisions are made below the chin and behind the ears, making them almost invisible.

Who Should Consider a Neck Lift?

If you are unhappy with your appearance and you believe that a neck lift can rejuvenate it, you should take into account a number of considerations:

  • Do you have excess skin hanging on the neck creating the “turkey wattle”?
  • Do you have significantly noticeable wrinkles on the neck and near the chin?
  • Are there noticeable vertical bands on your neck?
  • Is there excess fat in the neck and under your chin (double chin)? In such cases, it may be necessary to undergo liposuction to restore your facial contours.

How Long is The Recovery Time?

Recovery time with either platysmaplasty or cervicoplasty is similar but the exact time a person needs to completely recover can vary since the time it takes for our bodies to heal is specific to us (i.e. some people may need less time than others). Even though recovery periods do differ from person to person, neck lift patients generally return to normal activities within 10 – 14 days.

The first week after your neck lift procedure may be uncomfortable because you have stitches and compression bandages. The bandages have to be changed periodically, according to Dr. Denton’s instructions. During this period you may need help from others to do work around the house and get dressed. Also, during the first few days, your head should be kept elevated at all times. The swelling, redness, and bruising begin to subside after the first week. Oral pain medication will be prescribed to help with any pain or general discomfort.

After the first week, you should be feeling more comfortable and experience less pain. Your stitches will be removed and you can cautiously return to your daily routine at a slower pace. During the second week, you’ll notice significant improvement as the swelling, bruising, tightness, and numbness begin to disappear. At the end of the second week, you should feel much better and be able to return to work and the improvement in your neck will be noticeable.

How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?

Most facial plastic surgeons believe that a well-performed neck lift will last 10 to 15 years. Experienced facial plastic surgeons like Dr. Denton will perform all the necessary procedures to tighten the skin and underlying muscles as well as remove unwanted fatty deposits. These procedures will ensure that your results are long-lasting but you also need to take proper care of your skin, stick to a healthy diet and take regular exercise.
