Historically, cosmetic surgery has been more popular among women than men. However, as cosmetic procedures become more commonplace, the number of men undergoing cosmetic procedures continues to grow.
Recent Trends and Findings
Statistics by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) indicate that the gap between men and women who choose to have facial plastic surgeries and other cosmetic procedures to improve their appearance is beginning to close. Even though, in the USA, men account for about 10% of the total number of cosmetic procedures, between 1997 and 2015, the number of men who chose to have cosmetic procedures increased over 300%.
Similarly, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), in a survey conducted in the summer of 2017, reported that almost one-third of men were “extremely likely” to consider a cosmetic procedure. In addition, the survey found that about half of the men would want to have a treatment to feel more confident. A quarter of the men surveyed also stated they wanted to “look younger” in order to remain competitive in their careers.
According to experts, the increased interest in male cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures could be the result of social media and, surprisingly, due to the huge number of selfies taken. It could also be contributed to our desire to appear youthful and rested, especially since employers prefer to hire young, healthy and vital looking individuals.
The Preferred Facial Cosmetic Procedures for Men
Men are just as likely to undergo surgical procedures like a rhinoplasty or a brow lift as non-surgical procedures like injections and facial fillers.
Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty surgery, or nose reshaping, is the most common facial plastic surgical procedure among men around the world. It is performed to improve the aesthetic and functional features of the nose since it is a central feature of the face. Men’s participation in sports and other activities sometimes results in misshapen noses. Men also want to feel more confident about their appearance, therefore if they have prominent humps, crooked or excessively large noses and noses with bulbous or bulky tips, they may choose to undergo rhinoplasty. What’s more, disproportionate nasal size and abnormal nasal shape can gradually develop with age so men may want to recapture their youthful confident appearance.
Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty or eyelid lift/rejuvenation, like rhinoplasty, is also a very popular cosmetic procedure among men. With age, fine lines and bags under the eyes start to form which give the eye a tired, sad and sometimes angry appearance. Blepharoplasty is able to keep men looking fresh and alert. In cases, where men have a great deal of extra skin on their upper eyelids, by undergoing this procedure, they can experience improved vision.
This surgical procedure removes excess skin and tightens the overall look of the eyes. It is normally performed on both upper and lower eyelids. Eye lift surgery is a simple procedure with short recovery times and minimal scarring.
Browlift
Browlift surgery or forehead lift/rejuvenation raises the brows. As we age, our brow begins to sag and we may develop brow asymmetry. As a result of these changes, the upper third of the face and eye area may appear tired, sad or angry. Men choose to have this cosmetic procedure since it improves the appearance of the forehead, the brow and the area around the eyes by raising the soft tissue and skin of the forehead and brow. The eyebrows are returned to a more youthful position leaving a more alert and rested appearance. What’s more, noticeable wrinkles in the forehead and between the eyebrows are softened or even eliminated.
Men also decide to have a browlift because the incisions are small, scarring is minimal, and the recovery time is short.
Facelift
Facelift surgery or rhytidectomy is designed to reverse many of the changes that occur in the appearance and structure of the face and neck area with age. For example, by the age of 50, both men and women develop sagging or loose skin around the lower part of the face and neck which cannot be restored by even the most expensive skin creams.
A cosmetic facelift procedure eliminates any excess skin that is present. The skin and underlying soft tissue of the face and neck are restored to a more youthful position and facial liposuction can help remove extra fat in the area. Essentially, the skin of the face and neck is tightened, and the contour of the cheeks and jawline are restored.
Most men who undergo a cosmetic facelift procedure experience a relatively quick and painless recovery. Also, patients are able to resume most of their normal daily activities between 10 to 14 days.
Mentoplasty or Genioplasty
Mentoplasty/Genioplasty or chin augmentation/implant cosmetic surgical procedures are performed to enhance and reshape the chin area. Chin implants are sometimes performed in conjunction with a rhinoplasty in order to achieve aesthetically pleasing facial proportions. Facial implants for men have become an increasingly popular surgical procedure since they help create a fuller, more well-balanced and youthful appearance. They can provide structure and anchor the lower and middle face.
When a man has a small chin, it detracts from an otherwise well-balanced face and can make the nose appear more prominent than it actually is. If the teeth are in proper alignment, some patients can benefit from chin augmentation or facial implant surgery.
Most patients can return to their normal activities within 7 to 10 days of surgery. However, the chin implant operation should be completely healed after a period of 3 or 4 months.
Facial Fillers
Every year, more and more men are choosing Botox™ treatments and facial fillers to help them achieve a younger and more rested appearance with a short recovery period.
Dynamic wrinkles such as crow’s feet and frown lines can be temporarily removed to help both men and women rejuvenate an aging face. These procedures are popular since compared to surgical procedures, they are relatively painless, reasonably affordable, can be performed very quickly in a doctor’s examining room and require no downtime. Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm are also quite popular with men since they can be used as non-surgical facelifts. Fillers are used effectively under the eye area, or to fill deep creases and wrinkles in the ears and chin. What’s more, they can be used to treat deep pitted acne scars for a smoother complexion.
